The start

I just want to get word out as we have reason to believe that Mount Brier Amstaffs have lied to our family, sent fraudulent photos and has defrauded us out of $1365. I have now been in touch with several USA breeders and it seems this has happened in the past. I also yesterday received news on 2 other individuals who may have recently been defrauded, one of which emailed me to tell me his story.

When we first looked at a pup from Amanda Reichelt we phoned the AKC, her website and connections seemed solid and everything on the internet was positive. This blog is to ensure that the internet has something that states Amanda Reichelt of Mt Brier Amstaffs has the potential to lie and cheat under the guise of a puppy sale.

I wish everyone the best of luck in your search for a beautiful pup, but I would not recommend any business deals with Amanda.

  1. If anyone else has been taken, please post a comment. I believe some police action is in order. Fraudsters need to be charged criminally. They tell us what we want to hear and then take our money.

  2. Thanks Quadin, I agree!

Two of us ( as now others have made contact with me ) have filed a report with the Consumer Protection Agency and the Internet Crime Complaint Centre. She seems to think that she is untouchable...hopefully she can be stopped.

  3. The CPA and CCC are a good place to start. What needs to happen is police involvement. The other 2 agencies just stop future frauds. The police investigate and charge fraudsters for what they already have done. Another agency to notify would be the IRS. I bet she doesn't pay taxes on the money she takes from us. Believe me, the IRS wants their money and they get it!

  4. Hello, Yesterday I made a 300 dollar deposit to Amanda Reichelt through western union for a female Amstaff. Today I found your site. This has me worried, I hope this is not a scam. Have your issues been resolved with Amanda? Please keep me updated.

  5. Although I cannot say for certain that it is a scam, you are best to cut your losses at this point as she has defrauded many. After speaking to other AmStaff breeders in the USA she definately has a TERRIBLE reputation on many fronts. She is an amazing smooth talker and is good at getting money from people. I am still in touch with 5 others who are trying to get their money back. One woman got all the way to the airport only to realize that she had been scammed. If there is any more information I can give, please ask...but I have to say that she is not to be trusted.
Good luck on finding a wonderful pup!

  6. Cannot say for certain? Have you guys tried calling the police in her area or paying her a visit?

  7. How are you guys gonna get your money back? Can I get my deposit back? Please give me more information on this matter.

  8. I cannot say for certain that she does not have pups right now...but I can say for certain that we were scammed. I am sorry to say that you will not get your deposit back. Our family lost over $1300USD and others lost that amount or more. I live in Canada with a young family so a visit to Amanda is not really feasible. If you want more detailed info be in touch by email: jodicarlow@shaw.ca.

  9. I first made contact with Amanda middle of 2011 with the intention of buying a pup from Mount Brier. I was required to pay a $300 deposit in mid 2011 already to secure a pup that hadn't even been conceived yet. I gave a $500 deposit and was, at this time, promised a "pick of the litter", show quality pup. The (alleged) litter was born around mid October 2011. I was then requested to pay the balance of the purchase when the litter was born. I queried this since the website said that only 50% was due on birth and the balance when the pups were 6 weeks old. I was never shown pics of the entire litter, but only pics of 2 of the males that I was now supposed to make a selection by. At this time already, I had to have paid the whole purchase price of $3,000. I made a selection of one of the two pups based on which one I though would be more flashy, but come 8 weeks of age, the new pics showed a pup that was nowhere NEAR show qualtiy by anyone's standards! Come mid December 2011, though, I had been required to pay for vet's fees, blood tests, a crate, health certificate, the travel to the airport (including a night's stay at a motel), the flight to South Africa, etc. etc. all totalling in the region of $1,500. Every time Amanda asked for money, there was extreme urgency and I HAD to pay via Western Union or MoneyGram, even though she had a PayPal account. Whenever I needed some info or something from Amanda, there would usually be a lengthy silence, followed by excuse after excuse as to why she couldn't do something. With every transfer of funds I did, the MoneyGram agents here in South Africa take a 6% commmission, so you can imagine what the expense was mounting to for me. When I was sent the last pics during December, I enquired as to the age of the pup and Amanda's replies were becoming more and more contradictory. She couldn't remember the correct birth date of the litter as she "had so many litters around that time" and the whole interaction eventually came to a head when I asked that the pup be registered with AKC so that I would be able to register him with KUSA here in SA. I was asked again for money, at which time I had just had enough. Every other breeder I know includes vet's fees and registration in the purchase price of their pups. I also confronted Amanda on the fact that the pup I was being shown was definitely NOT show quality and not something worth $3,000 but that, if the pup DID in fact exist she must send it! At this stage she suggested that I then wait for a pup from another litter (per her "contract"). That's where it all went quiet. I've lodged complaints with the FBI (Iccc), FTC and the Washington State Attorney General. Including all the commission, etc. I have spent in the region of $4,700 for a pup I have still not received. The WA Attorney General route is a waste of time, since all they can do is issue your complaint to the culprit and wait for their response. They cannot take legal action on behalf of a private individual. I am still waiting to hear a response from FBI and FTC.
Subsequently, as of 3 weeks ago, Amanda's mother (Marcia Brown of FoxFire kennel) has made contact with me and has offered to make good on Amanda's contract and that I will still be sent a show quality, pick of the litter pup at no additional expense. I can only hope and pray that this is now legit and not just a follow-on from Amanda's tactics. The correspondence so far has been promising and I am hopeful! The $4,700 that I have already spent could buy me 9 show quality Amstaffs here!! I was dreading the idea of not getting that money back, but if I can still get the quality Amstaff pup that I believe I have paid for (and then some), I will be happy!

    1. At an investment of already 4700$ I would hope that you would incur no other expenses. You should get a pick pup and at least 3 grand back.

  12. Hi Cowgirl29,
How has it been going with your dealings with Amanda?? There were 3 of us that got taken at the same time and a year later, 2 of us received pups from Amanda's mother...but I think it was because this blog is finally getting the word out and it became more difficult for her. I encourage you to speak to the others - some are planning on civil suits. I had hopes that Amanda was righting her ways, but with more people like you get in touch it is difficult to say. I wish you all the best in a terrible situation!

    1. Hi, EVERYONE.
Just a followup - almost a year after the last post here! It's been almost 2 years since my last payment (totalling $4700) and I am still without a pup and still without any sort of refund!!
Also seems that nobody and no organisation in USA is prepared to help me.
Little old South African here must just accept that, what equates to roughly R50,000 now, is practically a write-off! That's more than a LOT of people in this country earn in a YEAR!
I personally think it is shameful that there is no organisation in USA that can help me. I've lodged complaints with FTC, IC3 and Washington State Attorney and only the latter has responded, but only to tell me that they can't help and that I should take up a civil suite/case against Mount Brier, which would require me to be present in USA. HOW THE HELL DOES THAT HELP ME?!?!?! I live half the globe away!!
      Very disappointed!

    2. Hi Mr. Desmond,
I'm from Montenegro (Europe). Unfortunately I did not seen this blog earlier. I had sent in Nov 2013 $600 a down payment for the male (show quality) puppy and additional $300 for blood test, chip etc. Puppy should be due late Dec 2013, but so far I did not received any info from Amanda about puppies. Most probably I will be defrauded as you and many others. I suppose to send $1,250 before delivery but I will not send any money to her again. My lost comparing to yours is less but I have a powerful friends in USA and will try to refund my deposit back.

    3. Hi, Radule.
Did you ever manage to get your money back? If so, I'd be prepared to give your powerful friends $1000 if they can get MY money back too!
      Cheers,
      Des.

  15. My experience with mount brier was nothing but good. My husband and I drove down to their kennel to get our second staffy from them back in March 2015 and we had paid in full beforehand with no problems. We got to pick our puppy out in person and they were in a nice set up in their living room and were obviously well socialized and taken care of as they were all friendly and interested in us. They were really kind and took the time to show us all of their adult dogs who were beautiful and well tempered especially with our children. The kennels outside were very large and clean and honestly it was a really nice set up. We must have spent a couple of hours there just talking dogs. Our previous dog that also came from mount brier was shipped to us with an airline and that dog was also paid for before we got him, again we never had issues with that purchase either. Both of our staffys from them are absolutely the BEST when it comes to looks and temperament. I would not hesitate to purchase from them again as they have always been there when we needed to ask a question whether it be by phone or e-mail.
